SEC is currently seeking a permanent full-time Maintenance to join our school staff. Under the direction of the Maintenance Coordinator, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for ensuring that the facilities are clean and in good operating condition for staff and students. Their responsibilities include cleaning the building and performing general maintenance and repair of the building, grounds, and equipment and providing assistance to the Maintenance Coordinator.
Responsibilities
• Assist the Maintenance Coordinator with mechanical tasks around the facility.
• Patching and paint repairs as required
• Provide assistance to the Lodge staff by doing daily check ins of the Lodge while also checking for signs of smoking, smoke damage, bodily fluids and overall cleanliness of the lodge
• Assist when necessary in cleaning bathrooms (toilets, walls, mirrors, sinks, etc.) and restocking all bathrooms with appropriate supplies as needed
• Clean and sanitize water fountains and restock cups for the water fountains
• Clean and restock linen and laundry rooms as needed and do a general check on equipment
• Maintain hallways and staircases: sweep, mop and shine all floors as required; vacuum all rugs in the school
• Perform monthly room checks for any damage and do any necessary patching, painting and quick fixes
• Do monthly bed bug inspections and check for signs of rodents activity
• Clean and maintain entrances from snow and debris.
• Empty trash in offices and collect all garbage inside and outside the school on the days the janitorial staff is off duty and during summer months.
• Assist when necessary in cleaning Art room (clean sink and remove paint when needed)
• Polish all the stainless-steel areas and wipe down touch points (railing, ledges, etc)
• Remove gum on the floor in the school
• Clean up unpleasant messes on floors and walls as required (vomit, blood, feces, snot, etc.)
• Clean and tidy smoking areas on daily basis
• Clean and shovel walkways (snow removal, salting, ice chipping, etc.)
• Perform a facility wide walk around to check for any mechanical problems
• Check all doors and locks and make sure that none are open or broken
• Do rooftop unit inspections and check for any damage or debris that can fly off the roof
• Do crawl space inspections
• Check all water traps and refill as necessary
• In coordinating with the Maintenance Coordinator, perform intercom tests
• Ensure all storage rooms are on each floor are kept organized
• Ensure the ground are kept tidy and grass areas are trimmed accordingly.
Summer Shut Down Duties:
• Do a full deep clean of classrooms; wash floors and walls, dusting computers and lights, vacuuming, wiping wires, plugs and smart boards, etc.
• Clean all glass in the school and lodge
• Do any patches, sanding, painting of scratches dings inside and outside of the school and lodge.
• Deep clean, scrub, dust and vacuum kitchen, common areas, back rooms, floors, hallways and staircases
• Deep clean the automotive shop; do a flooded floor wash
• Wash, fold and put away all linen (sheets, pillow, cases, mattress covers, towels etc. at the end of the school year.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
• Class 5 Driver’s licence required
• Trades experience preferred
• Experience with driving a riding lawnmower
• Comfortable working with heights and on ladders
• Able to lift and carry 50+ lbs
• Comfortable working outside
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Physically fit and able to be on feet for long hours
• Able to lift and swivel
• Comfortable working in confined spaces
• Basic computer skills
• Must be highly organized and have excellent time management skills
• Ability to handle stressful situations and deadlines
• Ability to speak a First Nation Language an asset (Ojibwe, Cree, Oji-Cree)
• WHMIS certified or willing to obtain certification
• Must be willing to be certified in First Aid, CPR and any other certifications required for the job
• Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Check
Working Conditions
• Working in a school environment

• Repetitive movements (i.e. cleaning tasks)
• Moderate and heavy physical efforts (lifting, carrying, standing, restraint, receiving shipments transfer of stock)
• Dealing with people of a culturally diverse background
• May be exposed to dangerous or harmful machinery

• Exposure to hazardous substances, chemicals, and/or bodily fluids
• May be subject to multiple interruptions, frequent or rapid changes of procedures
• May be subject to conflicting demands, priorities, multi-tasking and a high-volume workload.
• May be required to work extended hours/overtime
• Must be available for emergency calls, after hour calls, and building safety and security checks during the off seasons
Wages
Starting from $24.33 per hour
Schedule
• Monday through Friday, guaranteed 40 hours per week
• Hours of work – 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
